Marcus Reid on Starting with a Borrowed Truck, Building Milton's Most Trusted Custom Home Company, and Why He Still Answers Every Call

Marcus Reid bought his first teardown at 24 with construction savings and more confidence than experience. A decade later, Cornerstone Builders is the most awarded custom home builder in North Fulton County — known not just for the homes they build, but for the way they treat the families who live in them.
Marcus, you started in construction straight out of high school. What did those early years teach you that you still carry into how you run Cornerstone today?
Everything I know about quality I learned swinging a hammer for someone else. I worked under three different builders before I was 22, and each one showed me either what to do or what never to do. The guy who took shortcuts on framing. The guy who always made the client feel stupid for asking questions. The guy who could not be reached when something went wrong.
Those experiences shaped every decision I have made at Cornerstone. We document everything. We communicate constantly. And I still walk every single build site myself at least twice a week, no matter how busy we get.
You turned down a partnership offer from a larger regional builder a few years ago to stay independent. What drove that decision?
Money was never the only thing on the table for me. The offer was real and it was significant. But what I kept coming back to was: what happens to the client experience when we scale up that fast?
We had six active builds at the time. They wanted us managing 40 within 18 months. That math does not work when your whole reputation is built on the fact that clients can reach you personally. I would rather build fewer homes and build them right than become a company where a project manager I have never met is the face of my name.
Cornerstone is still small by design. I think that is the product.
Milton has a very particular character — equestrian, land-focused, private. How does that shape the homes you build here?
Milton clients are not interested in trend-chasing. They are not building Instagram houses. They are building generational homes — properties they intend to pass to their kids, where the land matters as much as the structure itself.
So we spend a lot of time in the planning phase understanding how a family actually lives. Do the horses need to be visible from the kitchen? Does the guest suite need a separate entrance? Is there a workshop coming in three years that needs a utility connection now? The house has to serve a life, not just look good in photos.
That long-view thinking is what Milton rewards.
What is the most important thing a homeowner can do to set a custom build up for success?
Be honest about your budget from the first conversation. Not the number you think sounds responsible — your actual number, the one you have talked through with your financial advisor and your spouse.
I have watched projects derail not because of bad design or bad construction, but because the client and builder were never fully aligned on financial reality from the start. Everything downstream flows from that first honest conversation. The builders who let you find out the truth in month six are not doing you any favors.
